So there you are, looking through the expensive bit of glass on the front of your camera at two people you hardly know, thinking how do I make them look good? Is it a trick with the light? Is it a 'looking good' filter under the Artistic Filter menu in Photoshop? Is it making them really, really small in the image so you can't tell anyway, but man oh man that scenery is spectacular? Is it that they paid you SOOO much that they believe they will look good regardless of what you do, a bit like the 'Emperor's new photographer'? Is it that the photograph itself looks good, so by association/participation To View More >>

Photography by Johannes van Kan I hope you have a blog. They're a perfect marketing vehicle for photographers, and they're free. Photograph every album before you present it to your client, write a post about them, their day and their album, and send them the link. Just like all our new possessions (and this is a very special one) they'll want to show their friends and family, talk about it and (hopefully!) recommend the person who created it for them (you). About twelve months ago Jonas Peterson left his high profile, high paying position as a leading advertising copywriter to become a full-time photographer... In his first year on the block he shot 42 weddings and jumped to number one in Google rankings for 'Brisbane wedding photographer' (actually he did that in two months). He's booked 15 destination weddings so far this year and describes his business as 'wedding photography with a touch of awesome'. He's built a loyal following on his blog (over 2000 hits a day), has over 1450 followers on Twitter and a similar number of fans on his Facebook To View More >>

The problems fall into three categories ... The software, the user, the computer. The software is good. Actually it is really good. It's not perfect, but with every iteration it gets better, and if it was ever perfect the developers would be out of a job. It has weaknesses but they are outweighed by its strengths. It could never be perfect because it is constantly evolving to meet the needs of a changing To View More >>

Kayla and I married last December out in the notoriously wet Waitakere Ranges, at a venue called Cassels. You can read more about the day here. The day before, bad weather was forecast. Not good. So I met up with our photographer Johannes van Kan to discuss our options. Options governed by what the weather would decide to do, and that would ultimately determine the format of album we went with. If it rained we'd focus on portrait shots around the venue, more suited to a smaller, squarer album. Sunny, and we'd head to the beach and get some nice panoramic shots and go with a wide format album To View More >>
